Data from recent surveys reveal that two tone, one high and one low have emerged in Maduo Tibetan speech, a transitional variety in between the Amdo and the Kham Tibetan dialects, which mainly stems from the neutralization of voiced and voiceless consonant initials and the simplification of initial consonant clusters. Though due to the existence and phonological function of voiced consonant initials from consonant clusters and a large number of consonant finals, the tones are just emerging and by far unstable, they have significant implications for the study of Tibetan tonogenesis and motivations of tonal splits in the Tibetan language.
