A Brief Comment on Halliday's Theory of Coherence

韩礼德与哈桑在1976年所著的《英语的衔接》一书中详细讨论了语篇衔接的各种手段,并围绕衔接的作用谈到语篇的连贯标准,认为语篇衔接是连贯的必备条件。通过分析韩礼德的连贯理论及衔接与连贯的关系问题,发现语篇衔接不一定连贯,而连贯的语篇不一定衔接,即二者之间并不存在必然的联系。

In Cohesion in English in 1976, Halliday and Hasan discussed in detail various forms of textual cohesion, and talked about in relative to the effect of cohesion the criteria for coherence in the text, supposing that textual cohesion is a necessary condition for coherence. Through the analysis of Halliday＇s theory of coherence and the relationship between cohesion and coherence, it is found that cohesive texts are not necessarily coherent, and that coherent texts are not cohesive, that is to say, there is not an innate relationship between cohesion and coherence.
