To evaluate the effect of retinoic acid(RA) on an experimenntal model of proliferative vitreoretinopathy(PVR),and the toxicity of RA on the retinal tissue.26 pigmented rabbits were divided into 4 groups at random.In control A group(20 eyes)and C group(6 eyes),PBS was injected intravitreally.B group(20 eyes)and D group(6 eyes),15 ug/ml RA was injected 2 5×10 5 retinal pigment epithelium(RPE)cells were injected in A and B groups.The eyes were examined by ophthalmology,PVR grades were observed.The retinas of the enucleated eyes on the 28th day were examined by light microscopy annd transmission electron microscopy.After 4 weeks,the rate of tractional retinal detachment(TRD) was significantly lower in amimals that received 15 ug/ml RA than in the controls.No evidence of toxicity was found in retinas after intravitreal injection of 15 ug/ml RA.There was no toxic effect on the retinas and the occurence of TRD was inhibited effectively by using 15 ug/ml RA.RA dissolved in ethnol could be useful to treat PVR when silicon oil is unnecessary.
