The origin of PE progressive form has been consistently one of the most hotly discussed linguistic issues. Among the various attempts, Jespersen's Amalgamation and Mosse's Inheritance hypotheses are the two sharply contrary but most conspicuous theories. Also in academic community,: two scholarly groups have formed behind the two authoritative linguists. Through a firm examination on the relevant data found in the six English versions of The NEW TESTAMENT translated in different historical periods, we realize Jespersen simplified the process whereby the progressive form occurred and his proposal lacked sufficient and powerful demonstrations. Furthermore, we suggest that the origin of the progressive form is most likely traced to a VP in a subordinate temporal adverbial clause.
