One thousand five hundred and ninety patients undergone reconstructive operations for postburn contractures during the eleven year period between 1988 and 1998 were reviewed retrospectively. Fifty four patients developed infection in the operative fields, and the infection incidence was 3.4%. Five potential risk factors in relation to infection were analyzed. Among them three factors associated strongly with the infection of postburn wounds, i.e:(1) duration of surgery lasting over 4 hours; (2) preoperative hospital stay longer than 10 days; and (3)patients with residual wound in operative fields. Shaving of the operative field too early before operation appeared to be associated with increased opportunity of infection, although statistical significance was not demonstrated. There were no statistically significant differences between the use of prophylactic antibiotics and infections in the operative fields.
