真正优秀的文学作品不应该是一种实在的陈述,而应该是一种拟陈述。所谓拟陈述是指字面上讲的是某种事物,其实作者讲那事物只是一种由头,真正想讲的却是另外一种意味。《红楼梦》整体是拟陈述式的。它的局部的许多故事、意象、情节、细节等等也是拟陈述式的。实在的陈述只是《红楼梦》的表层意象,读出拟陈述的意味才触及到《红楼梦》的深层意味。

Truly fine literary works should be an imitated representation rather than an actual one.By an imitated representation is meant that in a novel what is overtly stated is just a pretext,for what the author intends to involve is something else.A Dream of Red Mansions is,on the whole,an imitated representation,for its numerous stories,images,plots,details,etc.are imitated representations.As such,the actual representation is just the image of A Dream of Red Mansions on the surface,and it is only by figuring out the significance of imitated representations can one get to the profound meaning of the novel.
