Chen Yuan as a well-known modern historian and educator was not only a man of meticulous scholarship with impressive results but also made friends widely and spared no efforts in encouraging, guiding and promoting his colleagues and the younger generation of scholars. Cen Zhongmian's achievements could partly be attributed to the guidance and support of Chen Yuan. The two scholars admired each other academically, learned from each other and forged a profound friendship between them. They jointly promoted the development of the study of history and they are always our role models both in pursuing scholarship and friendship
