本文主要在新批评所倡导的"细读法"的基础上,通过对惠特曼挽诗《当丁香花开放在庭院时》中表现出的生与死的主题和所运用的艺术技巧,说明惠特曼作品形式与内容完美统一的艺术特色。

On the basis of ＂close reading＂ in New Criticism,this paper analyzes how Walt Whitman achieved the perfect unity of form and contents in his poetry by exploring his famous elegy When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom′d about the life-and-death theme and the writing techniques such as tension,paradox,image,symbol and musical features.
