Victorian writer Thomas Hardy has successfully created a group of "New Women" images and oneof them, Eustacia in The Return of The Native is virtually a case in point. In search of her ture rove, tne nero- ine tries to transpass traditional conventions but concludes with death. However rebellious or courageous she presents, Eustacia only appears to be the male writer' s ideological assumption, an object remarginalized into another victim in the patriarchal society. With the theory of narratology, this paper will reevaluate the image of Eustacia and probe into Hardy' s exhibition of male prejudice.
