The heated debate over the next-generation Internet Protocol network solutions is on the rise due to the surging IP traffic. After an overall introduction to various possible solutions, IP over ATM and IP over SDH are presented in comparison. The former is superior in QoS, multiservice support and bandwidth management, and is best suited to the legacy networks of the incumbent telecom service providers. The hitter is more efficient in bandwidth utilization and simpler in networking, and can bring more benefits to the emerging service providers.
