Taking Hu Shi’s famous translated poem Over the Roofs as an example, the paper explains why the appearance of modernity in China’s early new poems is closely related to the translated poems in vernacular Chinese and proves that the original modernity of China’s early new poems is actually that of translation, which is embodied in language expressions, poetic forms and contents. China’s new poems would not have appeared without the help of the translated poems because of the lack of the influential source.
