The working principle and its structure of a hydraulic free piston engine were described. The influence of check valve response on the output characteristics of engine hydraulic energy was studied by the experiments and theoretical analyses. According to the test results, the requests for the check valve response were made both to improve the engine output characteristics and to optimize its combustion process, so as to further optimize the performance of the engine.
