Based on an analysis of the 19th-century American literature,this paper examines the national culture of America in Moby Dick,a masterpiece by Herman Melville.It holds that the novel breaks the European cultural tradition before the 19th century to highlight the American spirit by realistic descriptions.Therefore,it can be well regarded as a national legend of America with a strong nationalist orientation.
