Edith Wharton was one of the most renowned American female writers in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Her novella Ethan Frome has a symbolic tragic meaning. This thesis aims to analyze Ethan＇ s tragedy in the perspective of the contradictions in themes, in the main characters Ethan and between the two female characters by the use of binary oppositions in structuralism.
