Foreign literature was an inspiration for early Chinese film producers. With foreign audience and international film market in mind, most silent films were inserted with bilingual intertitles when produced. For films adapted from foreign literature,an interesting phenomenon of dual-translation process can be witnessed. This paper carries on an analysis on the adaption of Shakespeare's Two Gentlemen in Verona into Yijianmei from ideology, patron and poetics in the light of rewriting theory. As to the bilingual intertitles, the hybridity in translation can be seen through elements of the original work, moving to the target culture and language, while influenced by Chinese language and culture.
