The nineteenth century saw Dutch painting virtually everywhere in English novels. The "great age of Dutch painting" is clearly a doubtful precursor for the new age of the novel.English novelists associated narrative fiction with the visual art of the seventeenth-century Netherlands through analogy. It was the novel's affinity with "scenes of common and domestic life" that contributes to the result of comparing such novel to Dutch painting.Professing to find "a source of delicious sympathy" in a type of painting that "lofty-minded people despise," the narrator deliberately set him/herself against the long tradition of theoretical responses to Dutch painting.
