自1984年起,孔祥星、刘一曼合著的《中国古代铜镜》与《中国铜镜图典》两书相继出版,对学习和研究中国铜镜文化起到了启蒙和推动的作用,在涉及到铜镜分类与年代的有关问题时,一般皆以此作为依据。1990年10月,台北学者颜娟英发表了《唐代铜镜纹饰之内容与风格》一文。1994年3月,中国社会科学院考古研究所徐殿魁《唐镜分期的考古学探讨》一文,
Sea monster as a foreign culture came into China with Manichean.The mirror emerged in the early years when Emperor Wu Zetian established Zhou Dynasty (690-704).This kind of mirror was the earliest ware from grape mirror with auspicious animal decoration to the one with sea monsters.
