There were other voices in the magnificent upsurge of Sinomania in Europe in the 18th century, trying to decode the China Myth created in the writings of Jesuits. The two Italian writers Giambattista Vico and Giuseppe Baretti were two most representative figures. Vico's criti cism of Chinese culture was a product of his profound thinking, which reflected a philosopher's independent retrospect, whilst Baretti's censure was rooted in his impulsive mood. The early change of the Europeans' attitude towards Chinese culture could be witnessed in these two writers' ideas.
