For such applications, low out particle greases are packed into the bearings. Low out particle greases, however, have problems with endurance wear resistance, noise, torque, etc. Therefore, a low out particle grease, which has both high capability and long life, has been requested. To develop a better low out particle grease, the authors studied the relation between the grease components and splashing. Some of the results may be summarized as follows. The splashing amount depends on the kind of base oil, for instance, if a mineral oil or synthetic hydrocarbon oil, which has a low polarity, is used, then the splashing is decreased. On the other hand, if an ester oil, which has a high polarity, is used, then the splashing is increased. The splash amount also depends on the kind and amount of the thickener; for example, a thicker(or harder) grease has a smaller splashing amount. The authors confirmed that the out particles consisted not only of base oil separated from the grease, but also of minute grease particles. Greases that splashed a significant amount had particles with a diameter size range of 0.11 to 0.2μm.
