A Discussion on Royce's Intersemiotic Complementarity——With Focus on Ideational Intersemiotic Complementarity

Royce的符际互补理论是在社会符号学及系统功能语言学框架中提出的,用于分析页面图像模态与文字模态在语义层面的互补关系,具有很强的应用性。本文简介了这一理论,并对概念符际互补的分析框架提出了质疑,尝试从系统功能语言学中借用相关的概念来细化这一框架。另外,还指出了这一理论的不足之处,以引发更多的讨论。

This paper gives a brief introduction to Royce＇s framework of intersemiotic complementarity which explicates the semantic interface between the visual and the verbal modes. It focuses on ideational intersemiotic complementarity by addressing such theoretical issues as the identification of Visual Element Message, attempts to modify the framework by the incorporation of some concepts from Systemic Functional Linguistics, and raises questions that could lead to further revision.
