摘要
上海大来轮船公司的老板大来先生是20世纪初美中贸易的大力提倡者和参与者。出于做生意的需要,他经常来往于太平洋的两岸,穿梭于美国与中国之间,为美、中民间交流和友谊穿针引线。他同时也是一位慈善家,在中国参与过许多慈善活动。本文根据大来先生自己刊印出版的日记和回忆录,以及别人对于他的回忆,试图探讨他成为杭州之江大学和灵隐寺赞助人的前因后果,以及一直隐藏在他心中的那个杭州情结。
Robert Dollar was one of the pioneers in establishing and promoting the trade between the United States and China during early 20th century.For the purpose of opening up business,he often traveled across the Pacific Ocean and became an active promoter of people-to-people diplomacy and friendship between the United States and China.At the same time,he was also a philanthropist,having donated generously to undertakings of charity and public interests in China.Based on Robert Dollar's own diary and memoirs,as well as other people's reminiscences,the present article aims to explore the cause and effect of his patronage to Hangchow Christian College and the Buddhist Lingyin Temple.
