Harry Levin defines A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man as a Künstlerroman,since it synthesizes the natu-ralist tradition with the artistic techniques of modernism.As James Joyce’s first long fiction composed before his experimenta-tion with Steam of Consciousness in his canonical masterpiece,Ulysses,A Portrait embraces a lot of modernist painting tech-niques in order to reveal what avant-garde writers believed as ＂the ulterior reality＂.Impressionist techniques are one of them applied in the text to assimilate both objective externality and subjectivist interiority.Specific analysis will go to the verbal iteration,the color and light effects,and the fragmented narrative.
