Deep venous thrombosis is the main cause of pulmonary embolism. It is important to prevent thrombus shedding into pulmonary artery. Recently, inferior vena cava filter has been extensively used in clinic, and is effective on the prevention of pulmonary embolism induced by deep venous thrombosis. This article discusses the history, indications, complications, clinical effect evaluation of inferior vena cava filters, and the use of new type of inferior vena cava filters.
