During the last decade, Wengan Biota, a fossil assemblage discovered in the phosphorites of the Neoproterozoic Doushantuo formation at Wengan County of central Guizhou Province is composed of planktonic acritarchs, benthic multicellular algae, cyanobacteria, bacteria and some possible animal remains. Since 1986, more than 20 papers and 51 taxa have been published and reported on the fossil assemblage. Although the affinities of some animal remains are still under investigation, the three dimensional well preserved microfossil assemblage is important for the further understanding of final Proterozoic biosphere. The preliminary research on Wengan Biota reveals that there undoubtedly exists a long evolution for the early life on the earth and many high grade epigenetic organism appeared in 600 Ma ago. The further study of Wengan Biota will be of benefit to the understanding of the genesis and evolution of early life.
