On the Impact of Southeast Huizi on the Southern Song Society

南宋社会经济的高度繁荣,需要与之相适应的流通手段及工具,由此产生了真正意义上的纸币——东南会子。东南会子的出现是社会经济发展的必然结果,它逐渐发展成为市场上的主要货币,执行着商品经济的货币流通职能,并以其纸币特有的方式,成为"国之命脉"。东南会子的发行使用一方面方便了大宗贸易的交易,促进了商业繁荣;另一方面由于过量发行,导致严重通货膨胀,对南宋王朝的财政及社会经济生活产生了不利的影响。

Social and economic prosperity in the Southern Song Dynasty required corresponding means and instruments of circulation, which resulted in paper money in its real sense-Southeast huizi. The emergence of huizi was the inevitable result of social and economic development, and it gradually became the main currency on the market, performing the circulation function of money in commodity economy. In.its unique way as paper money, it came to become ＂the lifeblood of the country＂. On the one hand , the issue of huizi facilitated bulk transactions and boosted commercial prosperity ; on the other, its excessive issue gave rise to severe inflation and major negative fiscal, social and economic effect.
