M. Butterfly has established two figures with blurred sexual orientation, and upset the stereotyped image of the West on the East. This paper seeks to analyze the root cause for the sustained relationship between the two protagonists in M. Butterfly, Song Liling and Rene Gallimard, utilizing Maslow's theory of the hierarchies of need as a theoretical tool for explanation. It's the mutual satisfaction of the different hierarchies of needs of each other that they finally became inseparable. And this accounts for why Gallimard chose to return to fantasy after knowing Song's real identity by committing suicide in the end.
