《孟子》中虚词“焉”的翻译

《孟子》作为"四书五经"之一,具有很高的文学价值。近代著名的汉学家理雅各成功将《孟子》译成英文,对此英译本的研究对文言翻译有着重大意义。《孟子》中的虚词数不胜数,用法也五花八门,"焉"是文言文中常见的虚词,对其翻译存在一定的技巧性,需归纳、总结之后方能翻译准确。本文从《孟子》中的虚词"焉"入手研究,选取了理雅各的译本,揭示了该字的翻译特点、策略和方法。

As one of Four Books and Five Classics,Mencius has a high value in Chinese literature.James Legge,a famous sinologist,has translated it successfully.Then it becomes important and meaningful to do the research on this English version.Throughout Mencius,there are a great number of function words with different uses.Among them,＂yan＂ is a common one in classical Chinese and its translation naad to be treated carefully after generalization.This paper is on the translation of ＂yan＂in Mencius of James Legge＇s version and reveals the traits and strategies of its translation.
