Accommodating cars in an urban environment has been an intriguing challenge both technically and culturally for generations of architects and planners. Pujian New town in Shanghai made a new contribution to a wealth of ＂Idealistic solutions＂ in that effort. This paper traces the lineage of thoughts behind Pujian New town and studies how idealistic solutions will have to confront social and economic realities.
