The earthquake has badly weakened the Japanese power industry, triggering the nuclear crisis that affected the country's nuclear energy development. The energy policy focusing on utilization of nuclear energy is likely to be adjusted. Japan's oil demand is predicted to decline in a short period of time. The country's demand for main petroleum fuels will drop 0.3 percent to 3.38 million barrels per day in 2011, but the oil demand for power generation will significantly rise 64.7 percent as compared to the same period of the previous year. Following the earthquake, Japan has taken a series of emergency measures, such as using oil stockpiles, raising the capacity of refineries, putting the exported products to be sold at the domestic market and increasing imports of oil products. It is predicted that the oil refining companies are hopeful to resume exports of products in the second half of 2011.
