有论者认为《三侠五义》的灵魂人物白玉堂是甘受招安的投降派,从而批评书中英雄人物是"驯服的走狗",该书"也没有什么思想见地"。而笔者认为:白受封非其所愿,是受到江湖兄弟的情感绑架,才暂时蛰伏于开封府。作者着意刻画了他的苦闷挣扎与逃离。因此不宜简单认定《三侠五义》宣扬奴性。

Some critics deem that Bai Yutang, the soul of ancient novel Three Heroes and Five Gallants chooses willingly to be a surrenderor of government, so the hero of this novel was ＂a tamed jackal＂, and the novel itself ＂ the city the matter ＂. The paper believes Bai Yutang accepted the official position unwillingly, and that he worked in government of Kaifeng temporarily was emotionally kidnapped by his brothers. The author portrays his anguish struggling and fleeing. The novel should not be simply considered to be a work preaching slavish.
