The third generation mobile communication systems have been named as International Mobile Telcommunication 2000 (IMT 2000) by ITU. Basic concept, functional requirements, interfaces and schemes of transition of the second generation to the third generation mobile communication systems have beendescribed in this article, as well as introduce some projects of chongqing university of posts & telecommunications in the third generation mobile communication systems
