In A Dream of Red Mansions the writer made the best use of a lot of smiles to describe all the characters. The smile in this novel not only pushes toward the development of plot, but also shows the profound Chinese culture. Four English versions of A Dream of Red Mansions lasted a hundred years and translations of smile in these four English versions have their own distinct features. Different translations of smiles show that the different times exert great influence on the forming of the characteristics of four versions.
