Place names of villages are a way to reflect the choices and adaptation to natural, social and geographical environment in the human social development. The density of population of the West River Corridor Strip increased further in the Ming and Qing periods, which led to the spread of population from the plains and river valleys to low hills and mountain areas. But the village types varied due to the change of natural and social environment. As for the naming of places, social-type names emerged in large numbers besides the names of retaining the original natural and living characters. This fact displays the socio-economic development in these periods in the West River Corridor Strip and lays a foundation for the distribution of place names and the naming patterns in this area.
