悲秋是中国古代文人特有的情结,悲秋意象也是古代文学作品中传统意象。究其源头,在《诗经》、《离骚》等作品中已见端倪。真正开始大量使用悲秋意象始于宋玉的《九辩》,一系列动植物、山川、地理、天文都被赋予了情感的内涵,特别是秋天衰飒的景物成为文人表达失志、感伤等人生悲情的重要载体。从表达意象上来看,宋玉的《九辩》开创了文人悲秋的先河。
