This paper discussed the material expression in the context of contemporary architects by analyzing the development of material and building material.The present material expression came from Heidegger＇s existential philosophy.Its main idea is to find out the balance between the building material＇s material expression and the non-material expression.The expression based on the manual media and the expression based on the tool media are main methods for the material expression.According on the description about the contact of material expression and the analysis of practical architectures,the paper concludes that：building material＇s dual semantic expression is the evolution of modern architectural;and the essence is the concern about building technology.
