The Letter from an Unknown Woman,a representative novel by Stefan Zweig,is well known for its tense emotional connotations and subtle psychological descriptions. Both American director Max Ophüls and Chinese director Xu Jinlei have turned the novel into a movie, trying to use visual art to interpret and transform the artistic charm of the original work. However, the two movies, adapted from the same novel by two directors with different nationality, gender and age, shows a great difference. The two adaptors and directors have reinterpreted and recreated the original work in their movies and added their own unique understandings while keeping faithful to the original to a certain extent. In their adaptation of the novel through"text reception",the two movies have conveyed an artistic transformation of deferment, loss and addition based on individual and temporal difference.
