This article engages in a close reading of the first chapter,'The Flats Road',of Alice Munro's novel Lives of Girls and Women, analyzing it from feminist,eco-feminist,stylistic and other perspectives. It tries to show that in her short stories and novels of Canadian local colors Munro demonstrates a broad human concern that goes beyond the limited gender and class politics.Hers is a milder criticism of human frailties and social problems with very subtle narratological skills to embrace almost all the key issues of her time.
