Stress on the Observance of Ethical Discipline in Buddhist Practice and the Development of Buddhism in the New Period

佛教的道风建设及其在新世纪的发展取决于佛教的继承与革新,取决于系统、健全的僧教育之实施。然而就佛教的现状而言,革新势在必行,继承尤为重要;参与意识应当着眼超越精神的实现;学参结合应当以理性化的学为先导。如此,佛教也就可以成为前人预言的"新佛教"而在新世纪中做出新的贡献。

The observance of ethical discipline in Buddhist practice should be stressed in the development of Buddhism in new period. Its success depends on inheritance and innovation of Buddhism, and providing Buddhist monks with a systematic and sound education. However, as far as the status quo of Buddhism is concerned, reform must be enforced, and inheritance is particularly important. Learning and participation should be combined and their integration should be based upon rational learning. Participation should be aimed at the spirit of transcendence. Only in this way can the ＂new Buddhism＂ be achieved as our predecessors predicted and make new contributions in the new century.
