In the period of the war of resistance against Japan, the connotations of novels Valley of Dreams by XIAO Qian and The Lost of Gods by WANG Xi-yan are so simple in the studies of present-day critics. The novels involve complicated problems that contain the identification of Chinese modem intellectuals and the difference between man and woman in the process of their emancipation. They manifest the difficulties of the expressions of the modernity of individual personality in Chinese modem literature under the dual pressures of Chinese traditional economic ethics and the ambitious target of the Chinese people in the modem times of China. The two texts demonstrate that Chinese modem literature is always "old and new, complex and muhivalent". The new illustration for such texts will help us break the existing frame of literary history effectively and a rich literary history will emerge.
