This essay aims to apply Grice＇s Theory of Conversational implication to analyzing the conversation between Stephen Dedalus and dean in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce,which on one hand can help readers better understand the novel itself and on the other hand will provide a new model of appreciating novels by using some theories of pragmatics.
