对赫斯伍德的悲剧根源的探究

An Exploration on the Tragic Root of Hurstwood

一直以来德莱赛的《嘉莉妹妹》一直被认为是美国文学史上的经典之作。大量的研究都通过对主人公嘉利悲剧命运的分析从而展现自然主义思想对这部小说创作的影响。20世纪初美国社会中的矛盾和冲突乃至现代人生存所面临的压力与困境。然而,对于小说中的另一个主要人物赫斯特伍德的研究却相对较少,对其悲剧根源的探究也大都集中在自然主义思想框架内。本文作者通过研究发现,其实,赫斯伍德的悲剧根源主要集中在以下两个方面:不幸福的婚姻生活与其性格中的缺陷。通过这样的研究,笔者希望能够对《嘉莉妹妹》相关研究的深化与全面做出一些贡献。

Theodore Dreiser＇s Sister Carrie has long been recognized as a classic novel in American literary history. Traditionally, studies on this work have focused on the causes of Carrie＇s tragic ending, thus reflecting the influence of naturalism on the creation of the novel, the conflicts of American society in the beginning of the 20th century as well as the pressure and difficulties that people have to face in modem society. Comparatively, however, there are not many studies on George Hurstwood, another important figure in the novel, and the studies on his tragic root have been confined to a naturalistic point of view. Throuth a careful analysis of the novel, the writer of this thesis dicovers two important reasons for Hurstwood＇s tragedy, namely, his unhappy marriage life and the tragic flaw in his character. The writer hopes that throuth such analysis, some contribution can he made to the analysis of this classic work.
