A Study of the Orientalism in the Scarlet Letter

该文以萨义德《东方学》为理论框架,分析霍桑的小说《红字》中"白种"对"红种"印第安人所执行地残酷的宗教统治以及严苛的种族歧视政策;并且通过对《红字》中女主人公海丝特形象的深入分析推断出霍桑眼中的东方女性形象——美丽、贤惠、荒淫、愚蠢、甘愿牺牲、丧失话语权、一成不变,再一次证实了霍桑无意识的东方主义思想。

Based on Edward Said＇s Orientalism,the paper attempted to analyze the cruel religion subjugation and the harsh racial discrimination policy carried out by the white men against the reds.On investigating the image of Hester,the author concluded the image of oriental women in Hawthorne＇s eye： she is beautiful,virtuous,dissolute,and foolish,willing to sacrifice,deprived of voice,and unchanged,which once again proved Hawthorne＇s unconscious orientalism.
