A Fable is one of Faulkner' s later works. The novel is an outstanding humanistic work in which Faulkner expresses his faith in man and his concern for humanity. The novel is a fable of the corruption of modern western civilization and modern people' s pursuit for self-salvation. The Christ-like figure Corporal sacrifices his life for peace, but his sacrifice does not help people achieve salvation. The other three main characters in the novel take different attitudes towards the evil war. Their choices reflect man' s plight and helplessness in the war, the loss and distortion of humanity in the war and man' s courage and strong will to keep his self-value and dignity. In A Fable, Faulkner' s intention is not to approve of or to condemn people. He is not concerned with making one final judgment of the human race. He wants to emphasize that man is capable of improvement in fighting against evil. And the hope of improvement helps people achieve self-salvation.
