The Defamiliarization of Characterization in The Fifth Child

《第五个孩子》是当代英国著名作家多丽丝·莱辛的又一力作。该书被誉为是充满哲理的好的恐怖小说，因其多变的主题和创作手法而闻名于世。作为俄国形式主义的核心概念之一，也是形式主义文论的一面重要旗帜，陌生化理论的目的是通过延长读者审美长度和难度，来展现作品的不同。本文通过对多丽丝·菜辛的《第五个孩子》中男女主人公：母亲海蕊和第五个孩子班陌生化描述的分析，试图找寻作者如何利用陌生化，通过人物塑造过程中新奇而特别的方式，让读者产生新奇陌生之感，增加作品的审美难度，体现作品的艺术价值。

The Fifth Child is the masterpiece of British novelist Doris Lessing a remarkable writer of contemporary literature; it is praised as a good horror novel full of philosophic theory, famous for its fickle theme and changeable creation techniques. As one of the key concepts of the Russian Formalism and a significant part of Formalism literary theories, the purpose of defamiliarization is to increase the difficulties of appreciating the novel, and thus show the differences of the work. This paper is going to analyze the defamiliarization used in the process of characterization from the description of two main characters： heroine Harriet and the hero the fifth child Ben in the book The Fifth Child, trying to find out how the author increases the difficulties of appreciating the novel through defamiliarization, by which readers may have the sense of novelty and strangeness because of the fresh and different ways of characterization, and thus show the value of the work.
