The emergence of domestic novels is closely related with the first American women's rights movement, the social ideology of "the worship of women" , and the economic situation of that time. Consequently, domestic novels serve effectively as a platform for the emerging middle - class Americans to advocate their moral code, and for middle - class women to strive for equal rights. This study explores the views on women and charity as embodied in Sketches of Married Life and The Poor Rich Man and The Rich Poor Man, and expounds, from three aspects, the effective approaches for the women to participate in public affairs and to seek for political expression.
