D. H. Lawrence has a sharp insight into human existence, especially interpersonal relationship. His deep concern about the complex relationship between man and nature, man and man can be discerned in his portrayal of various characters. Women in love, a philosophical novel written by Lawrence in post - war agony, is essentially profound and thought - provoking. Gudrun, one of the heroines, is a ripe fruit of the author's reflection on the possibility of harmonious human relations, worth our unremitting exploration. Reading from the perspective of Sartrean Existentialism, we cam find that Gudrun often plays the role of God unawares, to achieve a synthesis of in - itself - for - itself, that she has a detached and apathetic, distant and isolated personality, regarding the Other as hell, and that her love for Gerald gradually grows into hate because a "foritself" confronts the Others freedom once it fails to assimilate the freedom.
