The Ballad of Sad Cafe is Carson McCullers＇ distinguished novella,which has charmed generations of readers. It intro- duces readers to a haunting tale of human triangle among Miss Amelia, Marvin Marcy and Cousin Lymon. From the Lacanian mirror - phase perspective,the appeared ＂love story＂ ,the absurd human triangle depicted in the tale is actually the tale of Miss Amelia＇ s self - construction effort through connecting herself to the alienating image in the mirror,which is Marvin at first and Lymon later. However, due to the illusive nature of the image in the mirror,her self- construction based on such image is doomed to fail in the end. By analyzing the cause, progress and result of Miss Amelia＇ s self - construction based on Lacan ＇ s ＂mirror - phase＂ theory,the root of the complicated relations in this weird love story is fully exposed and demonstrated.
