When does Language Reformulation Start in Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting:The Serial View or the Parallel View?

本研究以串行加工观和并行加工观的争议为理论背景,探讨学生译员的口译过程中语言转换的时间进程。实验比较读后复述和读后口译两个条件下的自定步速汉语阅读,结果发现两个条件下的阅读没有区别,即都存在结尾效应,但都没有音译词效应。结论是,汉英不平衡双语者在汉译英交替传译中不存在并行加工,意味着语言转换可能是在源语理解完成以后才开始。

Within the context of the debate between the serial view and the parallel view,the present study investigates the time course of language reformulation in the process of interpreting.We conducted a self-paced reading experiment among student interpreters to compare the reading process of Chinese under two conditions： reading for repetition and reading for interpreting.In both reading processes,no facilitation of Chinese transliterated words but wrap-up effect occurred,which indicates that the two comprehension processes are not essentially different.The result suggests that for the unbalanced Chinese-English bilinguals,source language comprehension and language reformulation may not proceed in a parallel but a serial fashion in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting.
