On Tranlating Second-hand Proper Names

英语文献中对专有名词的使用正呈现出一个新的特点，即二手专有名词用得越来越多。这种专有名词与英语原有的专有名词在构成上有所不同，对从事英译汉的译者形成了特殊的挑战。本文认为，常用的专有名词翻译方法和原则在翻译这一类专有名词时，似乎都不适用。而且在实践中，此类专有名词的翻译也比较混乱，产生了明显的消极后果。我们应当认清翻译此类专有名词的困难，更新观念，适当采用省译法来翻译这些专有名词。

Documents in English are increasingly characterized by the use of large numbers of second-hand proper names, i. e. , proper names from other languages. Such names pose an unexpected challenge to Chinese translators, as it seems that they can in no way meet the demands of proper name translation in China while translating them. Improper translation of such names has indeed been one of the main causes of poor translations. The author of this paper holds that a potentially suitable translation method for them may be omission, retaining them in their English forms in the Chinese translation.
