The Cabala, one of Thornton Wilder's early fictions, has always been downplayed for its allegedly immaturity. However, this paper calls for a reassessment of its artistic merits in terms of allegorical narrative, and thereby understand Wilder's literary ideal in a more appropriate way. With a detailed analysis of the fiction's title, plot and archetypes ,it is concluded that The Cabala is not so much a "period novel" as an allegory that centers on Rom-as-a-trope and reveals the troubling relationship between classicism and the modern time. In this fiction, ambiguity is proved to be an essential strategy undertaken by Wilder to realize a self-reflexive critique of the tradition of allegory itself.
